To stay in step with the Lord …

2 Chronicles 20:17 NLT
But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the Lord’s victory. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you.

To stay in step with the Lord … sometimes means standing still. It is so counter-cultural to think that being in the center of God’s Will might mean we need to stand still. We are doers! We pray for God to use us for His Kingdom work. We think that means doing something that impacts others. And of course it does, but God is also continuing His work in us, as well as through us.

I have had two recent experiences where God called me into service. I jumped in, thinking I should do something. I tried, I tried a second time, and I tried a third time, and each time the Lord shut all doors. I’m only now starting to hear Him – I just needed to stand still and watch the Lord at work.

Does that mean I’m to stand still tomorrow? Not at all. To stay in step with the Lord requires keeping the conversation going – all the time. And for a work in progress, for me, it requires less talking and more listening. What do You want me to do now, Lord? I haven’t found any Scripture that tells us to run ahead of Him; that tells us to get a piece of the puzzle from Him and then fill in all the rest of it on our own; that tells us it’s now our battle to fight. It’s all just the opposite …

Exodus 14:14 NLT
The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.

Deuteronomy 1:30 NLT
The Lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt.

Psalms 139:5 ESV
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

Thank You, Lord, for Your patience with me when I run ahead of You. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit in me; repeatedly giving me instruction until I hear it!
